Smooth sumac does particularly well at the edges of woods and on open slopes or rocky soil. It needs direct sunlight, and does not tolerate wet soil. It spreads aggressively by rhizomes, so plant where it can have plenty of room to expand. Beautiful scarlet fall foliage.
